BRIEF AGENDA

Testimonials

We first experienced Acorn at the AI Hackathon in June 2017, (via a google search), and joining Acorn has ultimately eliminated our one risk - a huge relief for me. Kiran has been in contact with people from Deep Mind, KCL and Hanson Robotics through Acorn, not to mention getting great exposure to design thinking, Agile, visits to companies across London.  Elena is an incredible catalyst for truly excellent experiences and her intentions are genuinely focused for the child's benefit, something that sadly missing from the outcomes of government ideals.

Arun Patel, Dad

The atmosphere was buzzing, the young people involved were absolutely engaged and took their tasks, and learning the skills needed to achieve them, very seriously. More than that though, the levels of sharing and communication with people who, in many cases, they had just met was incredible. I think it is this that really touched me most, to say nothing of the actual products that the teams came up with, which were also most impressive.

This has been a life changing event! I enjoyed learning about different types of jobs out there, such as a developer or UX designer. I also enjoyed learning about different market research methods and most importantly, my team I were solving a problem with refugees & met with mentors from the UN. I wish school was like a hackathon!

Challenges

Clear your calendar - It's going down! These are the challenges for this year's competition! We're giving you a sneak peak of the challenges but you can read more on them here.

CHALLENGE 1 - SDG 3

Good Health and Well-Being

The amount of time teenagers and adults are spending online is increasing. More and

more time is being spent watching videos, chatting online, shopping, playing games, and

staying connected with the internet. Whilst many of the experiences people interact with

online are positive, increasingly it is also becoming apparent that there is a fine line

between time spent online, and time well spent. It’s also very difficult to know what the fine

line should be for each person as an individual.

How can we harness AI to help judge if the time spent online is time well spent?

Consider if this will need to look at the actual time spent on websites and apps, but also

how it makes someone feel, if it helps with a goal or target, if it increases their overall

well-being and happiness?

CHALLENGE 2 - SDG 4

Quality Education

Even the most educated of people often have a gap in their knowledge when it comes to financial education. Yet managing finances, avoiding debt, making savings and understanding interest rates are essential to our economic livelihood.

How might AI be used to help young people understand and learn to manage their finances in a simple and compelling way? How might it influence them to improve their financial health?

CHALLENGE 3 - SDG 10

Reduced Inequalities

There’s a huge gap between those who can participate in the digital ecosystem, and those who cannot. It’s both a geographic gap between countries and a demographic gap between different groups in the same country. On a global level, the ability to participate in the digital economy is a differentiator between successful and less successful countries. In wealthier countries it’s a differentiator between socio-economic groups: the internet is increasingly essential to access and manage finance, benefits, utilities, and maintain social networks; yet the elderly, poor and marginalised often find themselves excluded.

How can AI be used to improve access to the digital realm? How could it enable those without an existing digital footprint to function online? How could it narrow the gap between wealthy and poor countries?

CHALLENGE 4 - SDG 11

Sustainable Cities and Communities

As more and more devices exchange data, we have new opportunities to learn about the world around us. We have sensors in cars, in offices and appliances.

Think about the data we have at our disposal and what we could learn from it to improve our cities and communities. Identify a problem and consider how AI could provide a solution.

FAQ

Do I need to bring a laptop?

We do not provide laptops, so please bring your own.

Is the hackathon overnight?

No, as this event is for teenagers, this takes place 9.30 am - 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

What is Acorn Aspirations?

Acorn Aspirations is a social impact company, which aims to inspire young people aged 11-19 into the world of technology and entrepreneurship.

We are on a mission to bridge the digital skills gap and nurture the next generation of digital talent to fill the jobs required by the tech industry.

What is TeensInAI?

Teens In AI exists to increase diversity and

 inclusion in artificial intelligence.

We aim to democratise AI and create pipelines

 for underrepresented talent through a

 combination of expert mentoring, talks,

workshops, hackathons, accelerators, company tours and networking opportunities that give  young people aged 12-18 early exposure to AI for social good.

Our vision is for AI to be developed by a diverse group of thinkers and doers advancing AI for  humanity’s benefit.

Do I need to know how to code?

If you are a beginner in Python, that's great!

If not, do not worry - this course is aimed at complete beginners. Your mentors will guide you through the entire process.

This event looks amazing! How can I sponsor?

For all sponsorship enquiries, please contact Elena on elena.sinel@acornaspirations.co.uk

What jobs are there for AI researchers?

AI researchers are needed in EVERY industry and to give you an example of what they earn, take a look at this piece in New York Times.

"OpenAI paid its top researcher, Ilya Sutskever, more than $1.9 million in 2016. It paid another leading researcher, Ian Goodfellow, more than $800,000 — even though he was not hired until March of that year. Both were recruited from Google."

I love the sound of this event, but I am away in October. Could I just join later?

YES you can!

Email Elena on elena.sinel@acornaspirations.co.uk and she will send you more info.
